CP WOMEN’S OPEN AWARDED 2017 BEST CHARITY/COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ON LPGA TOUR

Canada’s National Women’s Open Golf Championship honoured by LPGA Tournament Owners Association for the CP Has Heart charity campaign which raised more than $2 million in support of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) – The success of the 2017 CPKC Women’s Open continued this past week as the LPGA Tournament Owners Association (TOA) presented Golf Canada and Canadian Pacific (CP) with a Gold Driver Award for Best Charity / Community Engagement among all LPGA Tour events.

The annual TOA Gold Driver Awards were hosted in conjunction with the LPGA’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championship at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples, Fla. The TOA was formally established in 1990 and is composed of owned and operated LPGA Tour events.

As part of their sponsorship of the event, Canadian Pacific through its CP Has Heart campaign, raised $2 million in support for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) to help fund a renovated catheterization lab and interventional suite.

“This award is the result of a total team effort and we share it with our friends at CHEO and countless community supporters, as well as CP’s staff, event partners and our CP golf ambassadors Brooke Henderson and Lorie Kane,” said Keith Creel, CP President and Chief Executive Officer. “CP supports heart health because it is an issue that touches so many Canadians. Together with our partners at Golf Canada and everyone involved with the CPKC Women’s Open, we are proud to leave a lasting charitable legacy in Ottawa through CP Has Heart in support of CHEO’s incredible work.”

The total charity contribution was the result of several fundraising activities tied to the CP Has Heart campaign. Through CP Birdies for Heart, CP contributed $5,000 for each birdie made by a player on the 15th hole at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club during tournament play with a total of 45 birdies representing a $225,000 donation. CP also matched all donations made online at cheoheart.com from April 1 to the end of the tournament.

In the four years of CP’s title sponsorship of the CPKC Women’s Open, $6.5 million has been raised to support children’s heart health in Canada.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see the CP Has Heart campaign honoured by the LPGA Tournament Owners with a Gold Driver Award for Best Charity/Community Engagement,” said Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum. “Thanks to tremendous fan, player and partner support, the 2017 CPKC Women’s Open was a resounding success and it is most deserving that CP’s community impact has been recognized with this meaningful award.”

The 2017 CPKC Women’s Open saw rookie sensation Sung Hyun Park card a final-round 64 to capture Canada’s National Open Golf Championship just weeks after earning her U.S. Women’s Open title. Park went on to share Rolex Player of the Year honours with fellow Korean So Yeon Ryu, making her the first player since Nancy Lopez in 1978 to win both Player and Rookie of the Year honours in the same season.

The 2018 CPKC Women’s Open will mark the first time the province of Saskatchewan will host a major LPGA Tour event when the world’s best players challenge Regina’s Wascana Country Club August 20-26, 2018. Through the CP Has Heart campaign, CP will once again make a substantial donation to the host community by supporting pediatric cardiology at the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2019.

SUNG HYUN PARK WINS CP WOMEN’S OPEN

News and notes from Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club for Sunday, August 27th

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– Although Sung Hyun Park is an LPGA Tour rookie, she certainly hasn’t been playing like one in 2017.

Park, who captured the U.S. Women’s Open earlier this year, fired a 7-under-par 64 on Sunday – the round of the day – to win the CPKC Women’s Open by two shots over Mirim Lee.

“I think it was a perfect game today,” she said. “There were no mistakes today and I think it was perfect.”

Park is essentially a lock for the LPGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year award this year thanks to her her major victory at the US Women’s Open a few weeks ago followed by her win in Ottawa this week. She made no bogeys Sunday and birdied two of her final three holes to lock up her seventh top-10 finish of the year.

“Because I am a rookie, I don’t really worry about every shot,” explained Park. “I just did every shot with confidence. My confidence made me do well this year.”

Lee had two eagles on her scorecard and locked up her best result since her victory earlier this year at the Kia Classic.

Shanshan Feng, Marina Alex, Cristie Kerr, In Gee Chun and Nicole Broch Larsen finished in a five-way tie for third at 10-under 274.

In front of hordes of adoring Canadian fans, Brooke Henderson locked in her career-best finish at the CPKC Women’s Open. Henderson needed three birdies on the back nine on Sunday to fight her way back to even par for the day and into a tie for 12th at -7 (277).

“Today didn’t go quite as well as I would have liked,” Henderson said. “But still having that support around me was amazing and I’m going to remember this week forever.”

On Sunday, Henderson collected her 11th top-15 finish of the season. On Monday, she will hop on the first flight out to Portland, Oregon, to defend her back-to-back Cambia Portland Classic titles.

Even though she signed autographs for over an hour after her round, Henderson is ready to get back on the course this upcoming week.

“I’m eager to get there,” she added. “I feel like I left some things out on the table right now. So I’m excited to get started on Thursday and hopefully defend for the third time in Portland.”

SUNG HYUN PARK WINS HEARTS OF THE OTTAWA VALLEY WHILE HELPING CP RAISE NEEDED FUNDS FOR CHEO

OTTAWA – Thanks to a masterful weekend performance, Sung Hyun Park has won the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open and helped young patients seeking care at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in the process. Park shot 13 under par on her way to the victory and Canadian Pacific (CP) made a $2 million donation to a renovated catheterization lab and interventional suite at CHEO.

The total donation is the result of several fundraising efforts of the CP Has Heart campaign. Through CP Birdies for Heart, CP contributed $5,000 for each birdie made by a player on the 15th hole during tournament play. A total of 45 birdies represents a $225,000 donation. CP also matched all donations made online at www.cheoheart.com from April 1 to the end of the tournament.

“I have not been to a golf tournament before that had this level of support from the community and the fans,” said Keith Creel, CP President and Chief Executive Officer. “It was a privilege to watch Sung Hyun Park lead the field of world-class talent, including CP ambassadors Brooke Henderson and Lorie Kane, while simultaneously supporting CHEO’s important work. CP supports the cause of heart health because it’s an issue that touches so many Canadians. As part of ongoing Canada 150 celebrations, it’s our honour to leave a lasting charitable legacy here in the nation’s capital.”

To celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial, CP launched the Beautiful Hearts campaign this year. In addition to the CPKC Women’s Open donation to CHEO, CP is sponsoring the Canadian Football League regular season, playoffs and the Grey Cup in Ottawa. That sponsorship will support the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Both of the Ottawa-based organizations CP is supporting with its Beautiful Hearts campaign are offering lifesaving care to Canadians who suffer from heart ailments. Children with congenital heart defects that benefit from CHEO’s work will later go on to receive care from the Ottawa Heart Institute.

“The CPKC Women’s Open coming to Ottawa is an incredible boost for our region, and all of us at CHEO are incredibly thankful that CP chose CHEO as the beneficiary of the CP Has Heart program,” said CHEO Foundation President and CEO Kevin Keohane. “The CP Has Heart campaign will help the doctors, nurses and staff provide the best care possible for patients and families at CHEO. CP, the LPGA, Golf Canada, the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, and the community have come together to support CHEO’s patients and for that we can’t thank them enough.”

CP ambassadors Lorie Kane and Brooke Henderson also contributed to the CHEO donation by participating in the Monday Brooke and Friends pro-am. Proceeds from the pro-am were split between the Golf Canada Foundation and the Team Henderson Foundation. Henderson also announced that her foundation will give back $5,000 to CHEO.

“On behalf of all the players this week, especially the Canadian contingent, I want to thank the fans and the community for the support,” said Smiths Falls, Ontario’s Brooke Henderson, the top Canadian at 7 under par and the new course record holder at Ottawa Hunt with her Saturday 63. “Joining Lorie as a CP ambassador and seeing the long-term impact of CP’s sponsorship of this tournament has been a privilege. A huge thanks to everyone who donated to CHEO and to CP for bringing the tournament and their charitable legacy to Ottawa.”

The 2018 CPKC Women’s Open will be played at the Wascana Country Club in Regina. For more details, visit www.cpkcwomensopen.com.

JIM PATTISON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION NAMED OFFICIAL BENEFICIARY OF CP WOMEN’S OPEN

REGINA – When the CPKC Women’s Open takes to the links in Regina in August, Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation will be the official beneficiary of the seven day tournament. Through its CP Has Heart campaign, Canadian Pacific (CP) will once again make a substantial donation to the host community by supporting pediatric cardiology at the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2019.

“CP is very proud to partner with Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital for the 2018 CPKC Women’s Open,” said Keith Creel, CP President and CEO. “This is a natural partnership as CP is focused on heart health through our community investment program, CP Has Heart, and the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital is focused on helping the youngest hearts across the great province of Saskatchewan – a province that has been integral to our network for more than 130 years.”

Funds raised through the CPKC Women’s Open will support a dedicated pediatric cardiology space and specialized equipment in the Pediatric Outpatients Clinic at the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. With a nature theme running throughout the hospital, the “Frog Pod” will be specifically used to treat pediatric cardiology patients and will include three echocardiography exam rooms, a pulmonary function technology lab, an exercise challenge room, and a regular exam room. Directly across the hall, included in the pod, is a staff echocardiology reading room.

“On behalf of Saskatchewan children and families, we offer our heartfelt thanks to CP and the CPKC Women’s Open for helping us further develop the provincial pediatric cardiology program at our new children’s hospital,” said Brynn Boback-Lane, President and CEO of Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. “It warms our hearts to know the impact this legacy gift will have for young patients, families, and the provincial pediatric cardiac team.”

The Pediatric Outpatients Clinic, which will see children for general pediatrics, cardiology, oncology, speech and language, hearing, and psychiatry, will offer three times more exam rooms than are available today. An anticipated 40,000 young patients will use this area of the hospital every year.

In the four years of CP’s title sponsorship of the CPKC Women’s Open, $6.5 million has been raised to support children’s heart health in Canada.

“Together with our incredible partners at CP and the LPGA Tour, Golf Canada is proud to bring world-class professional golf to The Wascana Country Club, the city of Regina and the province of Saskatchewan in 2018,” said Golf Canada CEO Laurence Applebaum. “I can’t say enough about the great work that CP does through the CP Has Heart campaign and there is great reason for Saskatchewan residents to be excited about the charitable legacy in support of pediatric cardiac care at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital that will make a difference in people’s lives.”

This is the first time Saskatchewan will play host to a major LPGA Tour event. The CPKC Women’s Open will run from August 20-26, 2018 at Regina’s Wascana Country Club. Tickets and corporate hosting are available for purchase at www.cpkcwomensopen.com.

BROOKE HENDERSON CARDS RECORD 63 TO VAULT INTO CONTENTION AT CP WOMEN’S OPEN

News and notes from Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club for Saturday, August 26th

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– On a day when Brooke Henderson thrilled hometown crowds, it was an LPGA Tour rookie and former major champion who sat atop the leaderboard heading into Sunday’s finale at the CPKC Women’s Open.

Henderson got things started in a big way early Saturday, birdieing three of her first six holes. She was bogey-free during the third round, and ended up shooting a course-record 8-under 63, topping the previous 64 record set by Yani Tseng in 2008.

Henderson sits three shots back of LPGA Tour rookie Nicole Broch Larsen and Mo Martin, whose only win on Tour came at the 2014 RICOH Women’s British Open.

What a difference 24 hours makes. On Friday, Henderson needed a birdie just to make the 36-hole cut. On Saturday, she’s just three strokes off the lead.

To quote Henderson – “I moved.”

The Canadian darling absolutely lit up Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club during Saturday’s Moving Day, dropping eight birdies en route to a course-record 63 and ensuring her adoring fans would again flock to the course Sunday.

“It was just like the perfect day,” said Henderson, whose 63 ties her career-low round on the LPGA Tour. “I hit the ball extremely well. Mentally I was right on. I felt in the zone as a lot of athletes call it. I felt like I was in the best place of mind for me to play my best.”

It was a seemingly effortless morning for Henderson, who teed off at 8:50 a.m., with Brittany Altomare. She made the turn in 4-under 32, and closed out the round with back-to-back birdies in front of crowds five or six people deep around the green.

“I felt like I could make something happen,” said Henderson, who will tee of Sunday at 12:53 p.m. with Cristie Kerr and Mirim Lee. “I made putts that I didn’t even know I could make, and I made shots that were just great.”

IN GEE CHUN TAKES LEAD INTO THE WEEKEND AT CP WOMEN’S OPEN

News and notes from Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club for Friday, August 25th

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– In Gee Chun is tired of finishing second.

Chun, who has notched four runner-up results in 2017 – including losing in a playoff at the Manulife LPGA Classic earlier this year – is doing her best to lock up her first victory on the LPGA Tour since 2016, as she leads by two heading to the weekend at the CPKC Women’s Open.

““I (had) a lot of seconds this year, but I think they were good memories for me and a good experience,” said Chun, who sits at 8-under par. “I think I’m ready to win.”

Chun made five birdies Friday and just one bogey to fire a 4-under-par 67, the same score she shot Thursday. She admitted she was having trouble reading the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club’s tricky greens, but managed to coordinate things better with her caddie, who helped her line things up better.

“I had a hard time seeing the putting line, so I asked my caddie, and he picked good lines,” she said. “I trusted my line and made it.”

Chasing Chun is a trio of Americans: Mo Martin, Brittany Lincicome and Marina Alex.

To say the pressure was on Brooke Henderson is a gross understatement. With thousands of fans watching her every move, the 19-year-old Smiths Falls, Ont., native two-putted for birdie at No. 9 (her final hole of the day) to move within the +1 cut line and ensure she would make the weekend.

“At the end, Cristie Kerr, she hugged me and said, ‘More pressure than a major there,“ said a clearly exhausted Henderson after her round. “I said, ‘Yeah, it was.’ “

After a first-round 3-over 74, Henderson knew she needed red numbers to keep her tournament hopes alive. She went to the par-3 eighth at 2-under on her round, but a costly bogey on No. 8 – her second last of the day – dropped her to +2 overall and a shot outside the cut line.

It all came down to the par-5 ninth. From 200 yards out, Henderson selected a 7-wood and calmly stepped over her ball.

“Just the perfect club, and I was yelling for it to drop,” said Henderson, who gave herself 25 feet for eagle to make the cut. “I pushed it a little bit right, but drew it in so it listened. To have that for eagle when I need to make the cut with a birdie, it was a really nice feeling.”

Henderson left the eagle putt a foot short and tapped in to the thunderous applause of her loyal Canadian fans circling the green.

“I’m really grateful for everybody that’s coming out,” said Henderson, who will tee off at 8:50 a.m. on Saturday with Brittany Altomare. “Hopefully tomorrow I can make a few more birdies, make a few more putts. Now that the cut is over with, we’ll be able to do that a little bit better.”

MARINA ALEX SHOOTS 66 TO GRAB OPENING-ROUND LEAD AT CP WOMEN’S OPEN

News and notes from Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club for Thursday, August 24th

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– Marina Alex took to Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club early Thursday and posted a 5-under-par 66 to take the opening-round lead at the CPKC Women’s Open. The American recorded six birdies against a lone bogey.

“The greens were rolling unbelievably well. Really quick,” she said. “The nice thing is they’re still a bit soft, so the shots are holding into the greens, so it kind of makes for a good combo. You can hit shots in there pretty tight, and then you have really nice pace to hold them.”

“I love everything here,” said Jutanugarn, who also had success here as an amateur, winning the 2012 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship. “All the spectators, they’re so nice. They come support us and not only the tournament days. Even practice rounds they come out and give us full support. I feel like (it’s) my second home.”

Alex has notched four top-10s this season, but her best result of the year, a tie for seventh, happened in February at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. She credited her putting as the key to her success Thursday.

“I putted unbelievably well today. I rolled it so good. So I hope I can just carry that into the next couple days and just tidy up the ball-striking a little bit,” she explained.

England’s Holly Clyburn closed out her first round in style on Thursday, holing an eagle putt at the par-5 ninth to cap a 4-under round and sit in a tie for second with In Gee Chun.

“I’ve just been waiting for something to drop like that all day, actually,” said Clyburn, in her second year on the LPGA Tour and looking for her first career victory. “I played solid all day, and that was just a nice present on the last.”

With throngs of fans following her every move, Canada’s Brooke Henderson battled with her putter on Thursday and opened the championship with a 3-over 74, tied for 107th after the first round.

“I hit a lot of fairways, gave myself a lot of opportunities for birdie and they just didn’t fall today,” said Henderson, who carded only one birdie to two bogeys and a double. “That can happen, and just hopefully I can just be a little bit better.”

While the score may not be what she wanted, Henderson could not help but smile when she talked about the tremendous support she has received from her hometown fans.

“8 a.m., there’s not normally (so many people) lining the fairways,” said Henderson, who lives an hour outside Ottawa. “It was pretty special, and I can’t thank them enough for coming out and supporting and just hopefully tomorrow I can play a little bit better for them.”

Fellow Canadian Hannah Hellyer is living a life-long dream this week at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. The assistant professional at Toronto’s St. George’s Golf and Country Club is making her LPGA debut after finishing tied for first at the Monday qualifier and earning one of the last four spots in the CPKC Women’s Open field.

“I don’t think I really was thinking straight,” said Hellyer of stepping onto her first LPGA tee. “My heart was pounding out of my chest. But I just had to kind of focus and try and get the ball in the fairway.”

Hellyer, who is paired with Tiffany Joh and Kelly Tan for the first two rounds, struggled in her maiden LPGA round, carding five bogeys and one double en route to a 7-over 78. But for the young professional who says she had thoughts of leaving the game, it’s still a dream come true.

“I’m glad that I stuck it out,” said Hellyer. “I think that golf has a lot of highs and lows… You have to persist.”

PAST CHAMPIONS EYE ANOTHER WIN AT CP WOMEN’S OPEN

News and notes from Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club for Wednesday, August 23rd

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– Ariya Jutanugarn has won the last two times she’s stepped onto Canadian soil. This week, she’s hoping to make it three-for-three at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.

Last year, Jutanugarn capped her five-win season with a four-stroke win at the 2016 CPKC Women’s Open at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary. And in June 2017, she won the Manulife LPGA Classic in Kitchener, draining a 25-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat In Gee Chun and Lexi Thompson.

Since the Thailand native’s victory in June, a nagging shoulder injury dating back to 2013 has been bothering the young player. She was forced to withdraw from one event and missed the cut at three of her last five starts. However, Jutanugarn comes into Ottawa off two weeks of rest and rehab and is ready to defend her title.

Jutanugarn will tee off on No. 10 on Thursday at 1:42 p.m. with Angel Yin, who sank the clinching putt for the USA at last week’s Solheim Cup, and 2017 U.S. Women’s Open champion Sung Hyun Park.

Lydia Ko already has her name on the CPKC Women’s Open trophy three times, twice as an amateur in 2012 and 2013 and then as a professional in 2015. This week in Ottawa, she would love nothing more than to add a fourth title and second as a professional to that tally.

“I’ve been working hard with my team to be a bit more consistent,” said Ko, who is looking for her first title of 2017. “I think consistency is so important on Tour because you’re playing week in and week out, and to have that consistency is going to help to, I guess, build confidence too. I love playing in Canada, so hopefully I’ll be able to have a good result this week.”

Ko actually almost became a Canadian rather than a New Zealander as a young child. Ko was born in the Republic of Korea, and her parents contemplated both countries before ultimately deciding to become Kiwis.

“I feel like there are a lot of similarities between New Zealand and Canada,” said Ko. “The people are great, super nice. The towns and the cities remind me a lot of New Zealand. So, I know I’m going to a different country, but it feels like home almost. The Canadians have really taken me in as one of their own.”

Ko will tee off on No. 1 on Thursday at 8:27 a.m. with 2010 CPWO champion Michelle Wie and 2017 LPGA rookie Nelly Korda.

This week marks Katherine Kirk’s first visit to the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club since 2008, when she won the CPKC Women’s Open for her first LPGA victory. You might think that all the excitement would make this a can’t-forget moment. But with a sheepish grin, Kirk admits that it’s all a blur.

“I remember a little bit of Thursday’s round and a little of Sunday’s round, but Friday, Saturday, not so much,” said Kirk, who trailed Yani Tseng by six strokes going into Sunday’s final round. “If you asked me what I shot, I don’t think I could tell you. Actually, I’d have to look it up.”

For the record, Kirk shot a final-round 69 to win by one stroke over Se Ri Pak and two strokes over Tseng. Of course, many people here at Ottawa Hunt still remember the Australian for her 2008 success.

“I’ve had a few volunteers come up to me and say, hey, we met you at the volunteer tent back in ‘08 and you signed a hat for us,” said Kirk, who captured the third win of her LPGA career at July’s Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic. “Or people would come up to me, hey, hopefully you can repeat from ‘08. So obviously there are a lot of folks that have come back or either volunteered or they’re going to come out and watch the tournament this week.”

Kirk will tee off on No. 10 on Thursday at 1:20 p.m. with Paula Creamer and Inbee Park.

FOUR EARN SPOTS INTO 2017 CP WOMEN’S OPEN VIA MONDAY QUALIFYING

Canadian Hannah Hellyer earns co-medallist honours to earn spot in first LPGA Tour event

Fourteen Canadians to compete at 2017 CPKC Women’s Open

OTTAWA (Golf Canada) –– Thirty-one players competed for four spots in the 2017 CPKC Women’s Open at Monday’s final qualifying event at Camelot Golf and Country Club.

Stirling, Ont., native Hannah Hellyer fired a 3-under-par 69 to share medallist honours with Madeline Sheils of Boise, Idaho, each earning a qualifying spot into Canada’s National Open Championship.

“My putting was really on point today,” said Hellyer. “It’s a dream come true to play in the CPKC Women’s Open and get to play against the world’s best.”

Hellyer – an assistant professional at St. Georges Golf and Country Club in Toronto – will be making her LPGA debut at the CPKC Women’s Open. She fell just short of Monday qualifying for the 2014 CPKC Women’s Open, losing a three-way playoff for the final qualifying position.

Sheils has played in nine events on the LPGA Tour this year. Her best result was a T35 finish at the Marathon Classic Presented by Owens Corning and O-I.

South Korea’s Ming-G Kim carded a 2-under par 70 to tie for third with Alison Walshe of Palm Beach, Fla.

Kim has played in five LPGA events in 2017 and Walshe has played in three.

Hellyer will be the 14th Canadian in the field at the CPKC Women’s Open. All are trying to become the first Canadian to win an LPGA Tour event on Canadian soil since Canadian Golf Hall of Fame honoured member Jocelyne Bourassa won La Canadienne in 1973.
