“LEAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT” – LORIE KANE PAYS HOMAGE TO LATE FATHER AHEAD OF FINAL CP WOMEN’S OPEN
Canadian golf icon Lorie Kane announced in May that the 2022 CPKC Women’s Open would mark her final appearance at Canada’s National Women’s Championship. Today, ahead of her record 30th tournament appearance, Kane shared a special nod to her father who passed away in July.
“My niece, Charlotte, decided we are going to need an extra club in the bag this week, so to speak,” said Kane. “There was a head cover made, and on the front in garnet red is the St. Dunstan Saints. That was my father’s hockey team that he coached….On the front of the head cover it says St. Dunstan Saints, and the back of the head cover is my dad’s cashmere sweater. My dad was always in a cashmere sweater…The boys put it together so beautifully, and had them inscribe on the bottom, leave it better than you found it.”
Golf Canada President Liz Hoffman also announced that the newly created Community Spirit Awards will be renamed The Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards in honour of Kane’s longstanding commitment to advancing the sport, charitable activities and giving back to the game that defined a Hall of Fame career. Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted until August 31st. Click here for more on the announcement of the Lorie Kane Community Spirit Award.
MEGAN KHANG ON FIRING FOR A GUINESS WORLD RECORD
On Tuesday at Ottawa Hunt, Megan Khang was joined by teammates Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, and Rebecca Lee-Bentham in a bid to set a Guinness World Record for most holes completed in three minutes. While the group was bested for the record by a squad consisting of Jennifer Kupcho, Alison Lee, and A Lim Kim, Khang pointed to the experience as a memorable part of the Canadian tournament experience.
“Honestly, it was a lot of fun…You know, I think Canada, we always call this Canada’s major, and it’s like the honorary major to us. So just being back in Canada means a lot to me,” said Khang. “It’s so cool to be back out here, and it’s really cool see Brooke’s Brigade.”

DANIELLE KANG FOCUSED FOLLOWING RETURN
American star Danielle Kang referred to Canada as her ‘second home’ when speaking about her return to competition north of the border. Kang recently returned from a leave of absence from the LPGA Tour, but is dialled in and excited to play in front of a great crowd at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.
“I just love to win, love to compete one-on-one,” said Kang. “But golf game, you’re not going to go very far by just loving to win, right? So I had to learn to lose, and I think that’s kind of what I changed with, as hating to lose to loving to win. And that will never go away.”
CGSA RECOGNIZES OTTAWA HUNT & GOLF CLUB SUPERINTENDENT
Eric Ruhs, superintendent at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club was presented with a commemorative plaque by John Scott, past president of the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) in recognition of his efforts in preparing the golf course for the 2022 CPKC Women’s Open.
The Ottawa Valley was stuck heavily by a freak storm in May that damaged over 1100 trees on the property. Despite the devastation, Ruhs and his crew pulled off the unimaginable and readied Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club in time to welcome the world’s best golfers for the CPKC Women’s Open.
GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS RETURN OF CANADA’S NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

This non-repayable investment, made through the Major Events and Festivals Support Initiative (MFESI), is supporting the 2022 CPKC Women’s Open as well as the RBC Canadian Open, which took place in Toronto in June, to not only return to but exceed their pre-pandemic scale. With this support, Golf Canada is improving its digital presence, enhancing on-site offerings and accommodating more attendees.

Golf Canada & Golf Canada Foundation pay tribute to a legend renaming the new Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards

Earlier this year, Golf Canada and the Golf Canada Foundation announced the creation of a new recognition award to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment of individual leaders who are using golf as a platform to positively impact their communities.
On the eve of the 2022 CPKC Women’s Open, to honour Canadian golf legend Lorie Kane who will make her 30th and final playing appearance at Canada’s National Open Championship, Golf Canada has announced that that recognition will be renamed the Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards.
The inaugural Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards will recognize a pair of remarkable individuals under two separate categories – the Community Leader Award and the Future Leader Award.
Kane, a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, Canada Sports Hall of Fame, and recipient of the Order of Canada, has been extremely active in supporting youth and charitable activities during her career. As a CP ambassador, Kane has also supported CP’s charitable platform that has helped to raise more than $13M in support of children’s cardiac care in the host markets of the CPKC Women’s Open.
“Lorie Kane has become one of the most active voices and passionate ambassadors for Canadian golf and it is truly deserving that Lorie Kane Community Leader Awards be named in her honour,” said Golf Canada President Liz Hoffman. “Lorie has been generous with her time in mentoring youth in PEI and across Canada, supporting future generations of up and coming athletes and giving back to the game that has meant so much to her incredible career. Lorie has worked with Golf Canada to engage the business community in their greater support of the women’s game and is a champion for our sport both on and off the golf course.”
The Lorie Kane Community Leader Award will celebrate an individual over the age of 19 with a demonstrated ability to lead community initiatives; someone who has contributed a measurable impact through volunteerism or charity; or an individual who has showcased excellence in their involvement with, or support of youth programs such as First Tee – Canada or other junior golf activities.
The recipient of the Lorie Kane Community Leader Award will receive a $5,000 donation from the Golf Canada Foundation to advance a golf program or golf-related initiative of their choice.
To recognize youth who are making an impact in their community, the Lorie Kane Future Leader Award will honour an individual 19 years of age or younger who embodies community leadership; has a history of sportsmanship or demonstrated activities to make the game more inclusive; or an individual who has used golf to create a meaningful impact in their community.
The recipient of the Lorie Kane Future Leader Award will be awarded a $5,000 donation towards their post-secondary education and will also be offered a paid work internship with Golf Canada.
The Canadian golf community is invited to submit individual nominations for the Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards through an online nomination form. The nomination period will close at 11:59 pm EST on August 31, 2022.

At the conclusion of the nomination period, all Lorie Kane Community Spirit Award submissions will be compiled and evaluated by a selection committee that includes representatives from Golf Canada, the Golf Canada Foundation, Honoured Members of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, industry representatives and the Golf Journalists Association of Canada.
The inaugural Lorie Kane Community Spirit Awards recipients will be announced during the 2022 World Junior Girls Championship, October 12-15 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont.
LPGA Tour players set Guinness World Record at CPKC Women’s Open

Many people have a childhood memory of reading through the Guinness World Records, finding out who had made record-setting marks in their favorite sport or held some obscure “World’s Most” title. Now, six LPGA Tour players have added their names to the Guinness files.
On Tuesday at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, two groups of three LPGA Tour players took to the par-3 17th hole in search of their place in Guinness World Record history. The goal? Make the most pars or better on a hole, set to at least 160 yards, in 3 minutes. LPGA Tour and Golf Canada Rules Officials were on site to ensure each hole was completed, not to mention an official Guinness World Records observer making sure the event met Guinness regulations.
First up, the trio of Megan Khang, Rebecca Lee-Bentham and Pauline Roussin, playing alternate-shot format, flew around 17 to complete five holes and set the Record.
“We realized by the green that it was a pretty long hole, so we were just trying to come up with a strategy. We were like, okay, maybe we can do this probably, I would say four, five times,” said Khang. “Then I think it kind of hit. The pressure hit when it was like, okay, the horn blew and we were like, okay, we got to go, we got to go.”
Five holes was a short-lived mark, as A Lim Kim, Jennifer Kupcho and Alison Lee bested them with six completed holes and the official Guinness World Record. All six players will receive official plaques and recognition from Guinness World Records for their feats.
“We lost the coin toss and so we had to go first, and I would like to think that we helped Alison, Jennifer and A Lim kind of see how to play the hole,” Khang joked. “But no, it was a ton of fun out there. There was some trash talking out there for sure. I mean, you don’t realize how quickly three minutes goes.”

BROOKE HENDERSON FEELING AT HOME AT OTTAWA HUNT
Canadian sensation and hometown favourite Brooke Henderson told media Tuesday that she feels great heading into Thursday’s opening round, and is ecstatic to play in front of so many family and friends at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club where she is an honorary member.
“I’m so looking forward to this week. Every year it’s circled on my calendar, and I always get super pumped up for it, especially as the weeks grow closer to it,” said Henderson.
Having the last one in 2019, it’s just been so long since I was able to play in front of the hometown crowd. Even in the practice rounds yesterday and today there has been so many people out watching. It’s just amazing to have this much love and support from home. I feel like I’m super excited to tee it up on Thursday and hopefully get off to a fast start.
Henderson, a two-time winner in 2022 including her second career major and a 12-time winner on the LPGA Tour, returns to the national capital as Canada’s winningest professional golfer of all time.
The 24-year-old from nearby Smiths Falls, Ont. is one of 18 Canadians to play in this year’s CPKC Women’s Open, including Lorie Kane of Charlottetown, PEI – making her record-setting 30th and final appearance in the National Open Championship.
WORLD NO. 1 JIN YOUNG KO READY TO MAKE LONG AWAITED TITLE DEFENCE
It’s been over 1,000 days since Jin Young Ko hoisted the trophy to win the 2019 CPKC Women’s Open and after two years of cancellation, the world’s no. 1 ranked player is excited to tee it up in front of what is sure to be an electric crowd at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club.
I’m always happy to be back here, Canada. I love Canada,” said Ko. “After the 2019 I was ready
to play, defend in 2020, but we had like worst in the world so we couldn’t play in Canada or wherever. So, it’s been almost three years actually to be back here, so, yeah, I feel good.”
MAUDE-AIMEE LEBLANC ENERGIZED IN RETURN TO NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
After returning to professional golf following a brief retirement and earning her way back to the LPGA Tour, Maude-Aimee Leblanc is proud of her journey back to the CPKC Women’s Open and competing once again for Canada’s National Open Championship.
“Yeah, I mean, I feel like taking that year off was a huge, was very important for me. It gave me time to think and put things in perspective, and really also think about what wasn’t working in my previous nine years,” said Leblanc, who is enjoying her best season on the LPGA Tour. “I felt like my game was better than my scores and my results, so it was very frustrating. Putting seemed to always be the common denominator every year, so I put a lot of effort on that. Changed coach; worked on my putting a lot.”
12-YEAR-OLD LUCY LIN TO MAKE ANTICIPATED CP WOMEN’S OPEN DEBUT
Age is just a number, but this week at the CPKC Women’s Open, it’s an important one. After earning a spot in the field through the Monday Final Qualifier, Lucy Lin of Vancouver will become the youngest person ever to tee it up in Canada’s National Open Championship (12 years, 7 months, and 12 days).
“Pretty excited, pretty hyped. Really no words to describe it,” said Lin, who will be going into grade 7 this fall. “The feeling is pretty awesome. It’s a dream come true, definitely being here like at very young age. But super excited. Going into Monday I wasn’t really knowing I would be here, but I did my best I could. But I ended up here, so I’m really excited about it.”
Lin’s historic feat bettered the record previously set by Michelle Liu of Vancouver who was 12 years, 9 months, and 7 days when she competed at the 2019 CPKC Women’s Open. Liu also earned a spot in the field during the Monday Final Qualifier.
12-year-old Lucy Lin among final qualifiers for CPKC Women’s Open

OTTAWA, Ont. – When Michelle Liu qualified for the 2019 CPKC Women’s Open at 12 years, 9 months and 6 days old, it was a record that many thought would last for the foreseeable future.
Then came Lucy Lin.
On Monday, Lin earned a spot in the 2022 CPKC Women’s Open via a 3-for-1 playoff in the Final Qualifier at The Marshes Golf Club in Ottawa, Ont. and when she tees it up at Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club on Thursday at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 12 days, she will become the youngest female ever to qualify for Canada’s National Women’s Open.
“I feel like super excited right now – I have no words to describe it.”
LUCY LIN

The Vancouver, B.C., native scrambled out the gates, making two bogeys and a double on her opening four holes. Five pars followed as she steadied the ship before shifting it into high gear. On the back nine, Lin, who finished as the runner-up in this year’s Canadian Junior Girls Championship, rolled in four birdies to get into a playoff.
“Honestly, I was just trying to hit every shot the best I can. [I] was a bit nervous, but I tried to just stay patient,” said Lin. “I had a rough start, but I had to come back.”
In the playoff, the 12-year-old made par on No. 7 at The Marshes to advance to her first ever LPGA Tour event.
“I had driver and then like a 128-yard shot and it was dark out, so I couldn’t see really well, but I just tried to do my swing and I tried to make my putt, but it was close,” said Lin.
In the end it didn’t matter. The champion of the NextGen Western Championship’s tap in par booked her ticket to the CPKC Women’s Open.
Lin says she thinks her mom, who follows her at every tournament, will be on the bag come Thursday and says she looks forward to “seeing those great players and having a great experience.”
The aforementioned Liu also advanced to her second CPKC Women’s Open with an even-par 72, author of the lowest score of the day along with Gianna Clemente, a 14-year-old from Estero, Florida. Canadian Vanessa Zhang posted a one-over par 71 to clinch her spot at the national championship.
“Just knowing how the overall experience works, I know that’s definitely something that will make the environment a little less foreign to me,” said Liu, who previously held the record as the youngest female to ever qualify for the tournament. “Having the experience of playing in an event where there are spectators and there are camera people, it not being the first time I’ve been in this situation will definitely, I hope, be advantageous to me.”
At the mere age of 12 in 2019, Liu, for obvious reason, found herself far back in the fairway from her older competitors. That is something she figures will change this time around.
“Over the three years from 2019 to today, you know, I hit my driver further, I think I’ve had a lot of experience because I’ve played in other events that really mattered, so I hope that can all coalesce into something that will help me play better.”
The CPKC Women’s Open takes place August 25-28 at the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club in Ottawa, Ont.

The Final Qualifier will include a field of 24 competitors competing over 18 holes of stroke play with the low four competitors receiving an exemption into the 2022 CPKC Women’s Open field. If necessary, a hole-by-hole playoff will be conducted immediately following the conclusion of play.

The CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit returns to Ottawa in 2022

After two years of the CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit presented by ICON being a virtual affair, there is a ton of excitement to have the event return to an in-person setting this summer in Ottawa.
And it promises to be a day of inspiring stories, laughter and fun.
Hosted by TSN’s Lindsay Hamilton, the summit is taking place on Tuesday August 23rd, at the Infinity Convention Centre – just a short distance from the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
The CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit has quickly become a can’t-miss event for business leaders in the community, with an unparalleled opportunity to network with like-minded professionals, senior leaders from a variety of industries, and the chance to hear from some of the biggest names in Canadian business and sport.
The key takeaways from the summit will be gender equity, representation, and seat-at-the-table conversations.
“We couldn’t be happier to have this year’s CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit back in person in Ottawa,” says Golf Canada Chief Marketing Officer and featured speaker Lisa Ferkul. “The line-up of speakers is one of our best yet, and with a ton of momentum behind the return of the CPKC Women’s Open, we know this year’s Women’s Leadership Summit is going to be a special one before the best golfers in the world take on Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.”
This year’s keynote speaker is Arlene Dickinson, the General Partner of District Ventures Capital and of course, the star of the award-winning television series Dragons’ Den.
Dickinson’s venture capital fund has a laser-like focus on marketing, funding, and growing entrepreneurs and their companies in the food and health space. She has been on Dragons’ Den for 12 years, and is a best-selling author, podcaster, and public speaker, plus a member of Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Hall of Fame. Her keynote address will be one of the most talked-about in Ottawa all year, with plenty of important insights from one of Canada’s top business minds.
While Dickinson’s keynote will be the highlight of the day, the panelists that make-up the balance of the day are some of the country’s biggest movers and shakers.
Alongside Ferkul, who has been a senior leader in the Canadian sports marketing space for more than a decade, attendees will also hear from gold-medal winning athletes, top-tier managers, and inspiring communicators.
The other panelists include:
- Cassie Campbell-Pascall (Two-time Olympic gold medalist in hockey)
- Steph Labbe (Olympic gold medalist in soccer)
- Tracy Schmitt (A quadruple amputee in the Canadian Hall of Fame)
- Caroline Lavallée (Senior Director of Communications & Marketing at MNP)
- Pam Arpin (VP and Chief Information Officer at Canadian Pacific)
- Karen Myers (Executive Director of Corporate Communications at the R&A)
- Clemmie Perry (Founder and Director at Women of Colour Golf)
- Tina Skeir (Member of Black Lives Matter Golf)
Hamilton, a long-time host of some of the biggest events on TSN along with SportsCentre anchor, will return to lead the day in person.
“I can’t wait to return as host of the CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit, one of my favourite events of the year. To be able to hear from so many inspiring women in sports and business is definitely not an event to be missed.”
Lindsay Hamilton, TSN Anchor and host
The last CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit to take place in person was in 2019 when the CPKC Women’s Open was played at Magna Golf Club, just north of Toronto. Attendees were treated to an inspiring keynote address from the LPGA’s chief brand and communications officer Roberta Bowman who spoke on the Tour’s new #DriveOn marketing campaign – developed by an all-female creative team.
This year’s summit begins at 9 a.m. EST, and while there will be a live broadcast, there is nothing like the opportunity to network in person, with colleagues or friends you may not have seen in awhile. Not to mention the chance to connect with some of our panelists, too!
Purchasing a table includes a three-course lunch, full access to the keynote address and panel discussions, and an exclusive takeaway gift.
While golf fans across the country will be thrilled to see the action unfold again come Thursday at the CPKC Women’s Open, the in-person return of the CPKC Women’s Leadership Summit presented by ICON on Tuesday of tournament week is set to be just as exciting.
