VOLUNTEER CIRCLE OF EXCELLENCE

Greg Fredin, who is a volunteer with the Communications Committee has earned a CPKC Womer’s Open Token for the work he has done for our committee (picture attached). Not only has he been an excellent problem solver, but he brought in a popcorn maker that has been a huge hit with all of the volunteers! We can’t thank Greg enough for everything he has done for our committee. Well done Greg.

I had the pleasure of working with Brian today.  He has a kind and patient demeanor that really helped the day go smoothly.  Whether picking up or dropping off carts, people are not always polite at the cart staging area.  Brian is completely unfazed and unflappable.  He is  also  great at problem solving when systems run awry.  He put in at least an extra 1.5 hours for 2 consecutive days to ensure those carts were ready for people in the morning. 

Mary Ann and I have both witnessed Cindy’s observations as we both closed late the last two nights.  I think that is why we had such a smooth day today and we should have another smooth day tomorrow.

Joan is a retired Athletic Therapist who has cared for many University of Alberta varsity athletes, and has been a valued part of the medical team in helping to look after the golfers and their caddies. She has been on site every day of the tournament, often coming early and staying late to ensure everything has been looked after. The players have all appreciated her warm personality, excellent care and advice. If you ever play at the Northern Bear in the morning  – you might be lucky enough to run into her at the starters booth!

Mark, Shirley and Cathy were volunteers with our Scoring Control Committee and each brought enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to jump in wherever needed. We were fortunate to have an outstanding group of volunteers this year, which made choosing token recipients especially difficult. 

Each of these three brought something a little different to the team. Mark shared his knowledge and experience as a Level 2 Rules Official, Cathy brought valuable experience from serving on previous committees and working with BC Golf, and Shirley brought incredible enthusiasm and a genuine eagerness to help. 

All three were dependable, positive and a pleasure to work with, and they helped make the week run smoothly and enjoyably for everyone. Thank you, Mark, Shirley and Cathy!

We want to recognize all Sue’s hard work at admissions.  She has really been a great asset to the chairs organizing volunteers and keeping the box office and admissions running smoothly. She has gone above and beyond, and always was there to support her fellow admissions volunteers.

Joan Higgins is a dynamic 87-year-old volunteer with an incredibly positive, can-do attitude. A perfect example came after her shift yesterday, when she spotted a volunteer wandering through the Stadium Parkade looking for a car. Joan, of course, stopped to ask if he needed help. 

He explained that his friend, also a volunteer, had suffered a heart attack and had asked him to pick up his car. Joan immediately had him jump into her vehicle, and together they searched the Stadium Parkade. When they couldn’t find the car, they decided to try the Windsor Parkade, where, happily, they found it. 

That’s Joan: 87 years young, always ready to lend a hand and determined to get the job done

The Volunteer Services Committee Co-Chairs nominates Gemma Fong for the Circle of Excellence prize.

Gemma has been a superstar in getting things done since day one. She was the first to put up her hand to take on an extra shift and today she is in again subbing for another volunteer!  Yay Gemma.

Katrina has brought positive energy, a friendly smile, and an excellent drive towards reaching our exceptional sales of 50/50 tickets! She has volunteered for five shifts – arriving on time and often staying beyond her assigned shift end time.

As Co-Chair of Caddie Services it was my privilege to present an excellence chip to Chunning Chen. His experience as a volunteer, enthusiasm and proactive demeanor are qualities everyone should aspire to.

Evelyn and her husband Ken had their first volunteer shift the day after they had moved to a new home.  Although tired, Evelyn was ever cheerful and helpful (so was Ken) and she helped us solve an issue with our Point of Sales device on our first day selling merch. We were so thankful! Yay Evelyn!!

Richard Franks has done way more than expected of a volunteer. On top of his normal duties he was observed many times RUNNING to the washroom so that the players and caddies could use it. Thank you, Richard a token well-deserved.

I was sitting near the 15th green and noticed a volunteer holding one of the posts that secured the awning for the hospitality tent. I asked her what she was doing and she explained the post wasn’t properly secured so it started banging against the fencing – causing a distraction to the players while they were on the green. She shared she had been holding the post for hours to ensure the players were not distracted. She had a huge smile and an incredible attitude. She’s loved her experience volunteering and proud to be part of the event.

Always showed up with a smile and a great attitude every day. When one of our standard bears fell and was injured, she tended to her with compassion. Overall fantastic volunteer!

Scott is a Royal Mayfair member and besides manning his company hospitality suite, Scott dedicated countless hours to volunteering for Communications. He handled every job we had and demonstrated excellence in problem solving and helping the team!

Brad was a volunteer with our Scoring Control Committee and was great to have on our team. When we found ourselves needing additional coverage, Brad didn’t hesitate to step up and take an extra shift. Throughout the week, he brought plenty of enthusiasm, a positive attitude and was always ready to help fans he ran into on the course. He also did a fantastic job on the radio, communicating clearly and confidently with the walking scorers and helping keep things running smoothly. We really appreciated Brad going the extra mile for our committee. Thank you, Brad!
